This Weekend

9H Design Talk

Our event on Thursday, jointly organised with RAI is something of a deviation from the format pursued last year. A sign of the manner in which 9H will explore knowledge sharing through different formats. Again, RAI says: ‘Extroversion, our big English for going to the Street prefers to do away with the insular, white-walled gallery, which we see as a vestige of the colonial; instead we embrace the city, scouting for existing cultural substructures such as newspaper stands, flea markets, owambe and apprenticeships to study and build on’. Design/Art and culture are inextricably linked. They mark time and points in history like almost nothing else. Perhaps this may play quite the role in shaping the teaching of these subjects. RAI think so. Out into the city to deal first hand with, and celebrate, contemporary cultural traits.

The Mistress of Wholesome

Tumini, a cardiologist’s wife, returns home to find that her husband's mistress has broken into their house. Moji wants her to convince her husband, Lakunle, to resume their affair. However, Tumini has more important things on her mind... "The Mistress of Wholesome is a sharp-tongued satire about sexual politics, family and the individual's place in society", says the director, Najite Dede, a maven in the performance arena. With themes of Dysfunction, Deception and Desire, the one-act comedy brings a fresh perspective to the debate on fidelity in marriage and the place of an unseen other-woman. The writer uses wit and caustic humour to pass its message, making it a potential audience favourite. The play also examines the role of adoption as an act of war and social intervention, and the function of policymakers in its implementation.
